Harrogate goes bananas for Fairtrade

A BANANA eating world record attempt saw a pair of gorillas handing out Fairtrade fruit in the town centre. As part of the Harrogate District Fairtrade Group's contribution to the nationwide attempt, a street stall on Cambridge Street gave away 430 Fairtrade bananas donated by Sainsburys and Goosemoor Organics. Local Fairtrade champion Coun Andrew Jones said: "This event marked the end of a successful Fairtrade Fortnight, during which we have raised the profile of Fairtrade products and encouraged people to try them." "I would like to thank Sainsburys and Goosemoor Organics for their help with the world record attempt. The support we receive from schools, churches, companies and community groups is great." 13th March 2009

Juliana-Jaramillo is the name of a group of about 70 farmers in the Dominican Republic who sell bananas to the Fairtrade market. They sell 100% of their crop to Fairtrade, and the benefits to the farmers and their community are dramatic. (Many groups of Fairtrade-registered farmers can only sell a fraction of their crop to the Fairtrade market because there isn't yet enough demand.)
